Dastaan

In perhaps the last ten years of Pakistani Drama history, a Drama Serial as impressive as Dastaan has not been created. Dedicated drama viewers rave about the dramas of yester years such as Tanhaiyaan and Dhoop Kinaray. Classics such as those dramas had ceased to exist until Dastaan was created. Based on Razia Butt's Novel "Bano" the drama revisits the time of independence.

The story of Dastaan begins in the late 1930's in the era of pre-independence. Two families are about to be joined through matrimony and where happiness is about to happen, sadness, war and destruction is about to set in as news of the formation of a separate state for muslims begins to spread.

After seeing countless dramas with actors playing people from everyday life, Dastaan presented something new by giving actors a chance to step into another world and take on characters from a time quite forgotten. The director Haissam Hussain and writer Samira Fazal searched Pakistan for artifacts dating back to the time period to create sets that would take the viewers back in time. A whole wardrobe was created for all actors to reflect the period clothing and with careful detail Pakistan was transformed into pre-independence Lukhnao, Punjab, Lithuania, and early fifties Lahore, Pindi and Karachi.

The drama could not have been such a hit without its amazing cast. Fairly newcomer Sanam Baloch took on the central character of "Bano", a young girl who invisions a Pakistan for the "Pak Log" who will leave a mark on the world. Bano is strong woman who works for the Muslim League by painting banners and leading women to Political rallies. Had Razia Butt invisioned a "Bano" it probably would have been just as Sanam Baloch portrayed her. A thoroughly impressive actress, Sanam Baloch did not leave a single dry eye through out Pakistan with her amazingly strong portrayal of "Bano".

Fawad Khan, after his plausible work in his debut film Khuda Ke Liye, does a far more impressive job in Dastaan in his role of Hassan, Bano's love interest. The Love between Bano and Hassan is legendary, one that is not seen in films but rather heared in myths and tales told by our grandparents. A dedicated Muslim League member Hassan is a man who has dreamed of a free nation for Muslims just as Bano has but fortunately escapes all the destruction, murder and insanity that took place during the partition of India and Pakistan. Hassan looses his dreams and becomes more of a realist in what Pakistan is and what it should be.

A small but incredibly strong character is played by Samina Peerzada as Bibbi, Bano's mother. Samina Peerzada is a Legend in Pakistan and her legendary status is rightfully earned when you see her role in Dastaan. A woman capable of displaying a thousand expressions at one time, Samina Peerzada has once again wowed all of Pakistan with her brilliant performance.

Dastaan was created with perfect timing. With the nation's recent condition, Dastaan and more importantly Bano's character, shows us what we did wrong and why our nation is in such a condition today. Dastaan is like the poetry of Iqbal asking all Pakistanis to wake up once again and realize what we have done with the blessing that was bestowed upon us! Dastaan calls to the Muslim youth and Old alike to stand up and take responsibility not just for our mistakes but also for our silence which has allowed every wrong thing to exist and persist in Pakistan.

Dasataan is a drama that EVERY Pakistani should watch and weep!

Famous quotes from the Drama:
"Yeh Pakistan hai, pak logon ki zameen, yahan koi Basanta nahin rehta." (Bano)
"Mien apni Qaum ki Hatheli ka woh chala hoon jissay woh sambhal ke rakhay gay." (Bano)
